During this introductory unit on addition and subtraction, your child will explore the relationship between counting and adding and subtracting and will develop the mathematical language associated with these two operations. In addition, he will practice a range of methods for adding and subtracting that he will apply to problems during this and subsequent units, including using a number line, counters, and the abacus. Your child will also practice adding coin amounts and will explore turn-around facts (the commutative property of addition). The final project asks him to model addition and subtraction problems by creating a sticker book.
This unit requires the following books:
- Animals on Board by Stuart J. Murphy
- If You Were a Minus Sign by Trisha Speed Shaskan
