Literature Unit - Morning Girl

by Kim A. Howe, M.S.
$19.99

Within our literature-based homeschool curriculum, Morning Girl blends historical insight with creative expression. As students explore how Morning Girl and Star Boy tell their stories differently, they learn about "point-of-view" in literature and how perspectives shape storytelling.

Key Features:

  • Multidisciplinary Approach: This unit interweaves geography, art, history, and environmental science, fostering a well-rounded education. For example, students will craft their own island, resembling the Bahamas.
  • Critical Thinking: Engaging with the historical event of Columbus' arrival from both Morning Girl's and Star Boy's perspectives ignites students' ability to critically assess cause and effect.
  • Creative Writing: Through exercises like "Two Perspectives Writing," students develop as writers and thinkers. They will create narratives with contrasting viewpoints, enhancing their ability to express complex ideas and emotions.
  • Cultural Empathy: Students explore Taino culture and societal change, building empathy for diverse historical experiences.

Students will cover an array of stimulating tasks: from singing historical songs that make learning facts enjoyable, to role-playing and poetry exercises that enliven cultural appreciation and historical empathy. This language arts unit spans three weeks of our comprehensive Age 7-9 curriculum, typically used as a third-grade homeschool curriculum.
