Lesson 6: Marine Life

Getting Started

Today the crew continues on its journey and encounters some amazing ocean animals. The crewmembers' personalities do not always work well together. They encounter interpersonal issues while living in such close quarters on the boat.

Stuff You Need

  • The Wanderer by Sharon Creech
  • cardstock paper* (Activity 2 - Option 1)
  • colored pencils or markers
  • hole punch* (Activity 2 - Option 1)
  • hook screw* (Activity 2 - Option 1)
  • origami paper in gray, red, and blue or 6" x 6" sheets of paper in gray, red, and blue* (Activity 2 - Option 2)
  • scissors
  • string* (Activity 2 - Option 1)
  • wire hanger* (Activity 2 - Option 1)

  • Words and definitions:
  • Deftly - in a skillful manner, quickly and neatly
  • Careening - staggering when you walk
  • Gnarly - challenging and dangerous
  • Sextant - a navigational instrument that incorporates a telescope and an angular scale and is used to work out latitude and longitude
  • Badgering - pestering and annoying someone
  • Woes - unfortunate happenings

Introducing the Lesson

Explain that in today's chapters the crew will encounter some amazing wildlife on their ocean journey. The animals symbolize different things to the different crewmembers. You will see a different side to many of the characters.
Reading and Questions

Read Chapters 31-35 and then answer the following questions in complete sentences:
Questions
  1. Who was Little Peep?
    A bird that Cody and Sophie found on the deck.
  2. Why do you think Brian keeps talking about orphans?
    Because Sophie's parents died when she was young and she was adopted by new parents.
  3. Why is it insensitive of Brian to talk about orphans?
    It hurts Sophie's feelings and is rude.
  4. Do you think Bompie should keep getting in the water? Why or why not?
    Answers will vary.
