Age 6-8 notify me

need help regarding math concepts

We just started the age 6-8 level last week. I was originally very excited about this curriculum for my first grader but am having second thoughts. We started the lesson on money today and I'm just not understanding jumping to equivalent money concepts before learning addition and subtraction well. It's only the first couple weeks of 1st grade. We use Math U See for math and money isn't introduced until the middle of the second grade curriculum. I can skip over many math concepts in the Community concept but the second concept for the 6-8 level is almost entirely math. I feel like it's going to be completely over her head. Will the other two concepts make sense if we skip the second concept all together? Feeling very anxious about this curriculum now. I want her to love learning and there is plenty of time to cover some of these topics.

Hi Meghann,

Thank you for reaching out. Our 6-8 level is for advanced first graders, but on-level second graders. With that said, your child may be ready for the advanced level for reading and writing, but may be on level for math concepts.

Even if that is the case I would encourage you to use the math that shows up in the curriculum to teach and reinforce the concepts. If your child is unable to do the work herself, then maybe it can be something you walk through together. Your Math U See program will fill in any gaps, but this presentation of the math concepts may provide a different way of looking at something or a brief introduction that will be followed upon in coming months through your math program. The majority of math concepts presented are more like real life problems.

As far as skipping the second concept, the part that would concern me most is reading and writing. The third concept is pretty challenging in this regard. If that is an area of strength for your child, then it should be fine. Otherwise you may need to take the concept slowly to make sure your daughter understands everything.

I hope this helps, but if you have more concerns or questions, please feel free to email or call me.

Thank you,

Does the new math program work with the California State Standards?

Hi Janine,

California has adopted the Common Core State Standards, and our new math program fully covers those standards. Let me know if you have any other questions about that.
