Age 10 to 12
Overview
Explore how earthquakes, climate, ocean waves, and volcanoes make the world such a dynamic planet. Journey to the microscopic world of cells to learn how building blocks of life function and reproduce. Read incredible stories about men and women in our country’s past who sacrificed to ensure freedom and equal treatment for all. Experiment with chemical and physical changes.
At Moving Beyond the Page we believe that children learn when they are actively engaged in their learning. This is why we include many hands on and engaging science kits to teach your child the science topics being covered. You cannot find a more hands on science curriculum available for homeschoolers.
The Age 10-12 level uses these and many more activities to thoroughly cover the state and national standards in science, social studies, and language arts. Add Life of Fred math for a complete and comprehensive homeschool curriculum.
The Age 10-12 curriculum constitutes one year of academic instruction.
Using the 10-12 Curriculum
In this level, we want students to begin taking more responsibility for formulating their own ideas and directing their day. For this reason, our 10-12 units are all student directed. The primary lesson plans are written for your child to read and follow. As a parent, you will still be actively involved. We provide parent overviews of each lesson that include descriptions of the activities and answer keys for you. There are still many activities and opportunities for you to work with your child.
The Age 10-12 level has a flexible design that allows you to tailor a program to meet your needs. You can use the curriculum in each of the following ways:
- Comprehensive Curriculum
With Moving Beyond the Page science / social studies core, accompanying literature units, and Life of Fred math, you will have everything you need for a full year of homeschooling that will engage and challenge your gifted child.
- Complete Language Arts Curriculum
Purchase all 12 literature units and teach your child vocabulary, grammar, writing, spelling, story elements, and figurative language while developing a love of literature using books like Tuck Everlasting, The Giver, and Esperanza Rising.
- Complete Science and Social Studies Curriculum
Purchase all 12 science / social studies units and teach your child about geography, climate, chemistry, physics, cell biology, American History from the Civil War through the civil rights movement, and the history and culture of North and South America.
- Supplement Any Existing Curriculum
Pick a science or social studies topic that piques your child's interest or a book that she will enjoy reading and supplement your current homeschool curriculum. Everything in our program is available to purchase individually.
What's New and Different for Age 10-12
Like the previous levels, the Age 10-12 curriculum covers the standards in science, social studies, and language arts. The literature units can be bought independently from the science and social studies units. This provides you with the option of utilizing Moving Beyond the Page as an independent language arts program or as a science / social studies program to supplement your current curriculum.
There are a total of 12 literature units that accompany the Age 10-12 level. They are each designed to accompany one of the 12 science / social studies units that make up the year-long curriculum package. All units are broken down into daily lesson plans. When you begin lesson 1 of a science / social studies unit, you will also begin the first day of the corresponding literature unit. The knowledge gained in each science and social studies unit is reinforced through the corresponding literature unit.
The list below shows how each of the science and social studies units line up with the language arts units.

In the Age 10-12 curriculum, your child will explore all subject areas using a hands-on and investigative approach. Oftentimes, homeschoolers are only taught reading, writing, and math during the elementary years, but a truly comprehensive curriculum will expose them to science and social studies as well. These subjects can be the most engaging and exciting for a young child. The curriculum is also filled with quality literature to enjoy with your child.
Because all lessons are based on state and national standards, your child will learn all of the necessary skills for his age. Your child will continue to be challenged to read and write at a higher level.
Prerequisites
Able to read and comprehend books on a 6th or 7th grade reading level.
Able to write multiple paragraphs on a topic.
Familiar with the five paragraph essay.
Science Kits and Manipulatives
The Age 10-12 curriculum provides a number of hands-on science kits and manipulatives. These kits will provide your child with a hands-on experience that is unparalleled in any homeschool curriculum. If you have a hands-on learner, you have found a curriculum designed with them in mind.
Beginning with the Age 10-12 level, we are also including many of the common materials for our hands-on activities in the science kits. Our goal is to help you provide quality science instruction for your child without the hassle of gathering lots of materials.
What Else Do I Need?
Moving Beyond the Page encourages character development - kindness, honesty, and respect for authority. Even though we are not a religious curriculum, our curriculum is conducive to supplementing with religious stories and lessons. For example, when studying communities, you can talk about how God wants you to show kindness to everyone in your community. While many parents add their own religious studies, others choose to supplement with a separate religious curriculum.
If your child is not yet writing in cursive, you will probably want to supplement with a cursive handwriting program.
The Age 10-12 Full Year Curriculum Package covers science, social studies, and language arts. When purchased with Life of Fred math, you will have a comprehensive curriculum for your child.
