Many gifted children suffer from anxiety in social or academic settings. It can be challenging to know when the anxiety issues are out of the normal range. My own son has struggled with anxiety, especially when it comes to worrying and obsessing over events that are out of his control. He tends to exhibit more anxious tendencies when he is in situations that are very structured and where he feels he is being controlled. These anxiety issues are one of the many reasons that homeschooling is such a wonderful option for him. He can feel free to ask questions about thoughts that are disturbing him, he can work at his own pace, and he can have some freedom in how he approaches his learning.
The link below will take you to a podcast that will help provide some insight into understanding our children’s anxieties and how to help them overcome anxiety. The podcast is provided by Prufrock Press and consists of an interview with Dr. Bonnie Zucker. For me, one of the most helpful parts of the talk is when Dr. Zucker encourages parents to identify the thoughts that are triggering the anxiety. These thinking errors can then be replaced or corrected with more accurate and helpful thinking strategies. I also found that the breathing techniques that are mentioned can be helpful for my son when he is anxious.
